HHS is Returning to Malta in 2012

A Welcome from your Program Directors

It is with a great pleasure that Julie and I welcome you to our Malta Website. I hope you enjoy perusing the site as much as we have enjoyed creating it. Malta is considered a Mediterranean island paradise and has served as a vacation haven for Europeans for many years. The country is located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, 58 miles south of Sicily and 179 miles from North Africa. Malta is the largest of a group of islands, slightly smaller than Washington, D.C. with a population of more than 400,000. The rich history, the diverse population, the street markets and the multiple shopping opportunities give Malta a continental, European flair.

The HHS program in Malta began in 2003 when the late Dr. Vida Huber, Associate Dean for Health and Human Services selected two faculty, myself and Dr. Cynthia O’Donoghue (CSD) to visit Malta, tour and assess their health care system, speak with key government and University officials, to investigate the possibility of an interdisciplinary program for HHS students in Malta. Needless to say, we created a program that has run during Maymester for the past six years. Approximately 85 Graduate and Undergraduate students from all health care disciplines have participated and have successfully completed course requirements while enjoying an unsurpassed cultural experience.

Students describe their Malta experience as “awesome”, “life-changing”, and “amazing”. The interdisciplinary nature of the program allows students from all health care specialties to explore the Maltese Health Care System (currently rated the 5th best system in the world), gather research data and explore the concept of team work while building global alliances and lasting friendships. Cultural excursions provide students a better understanding of the Maltese people, their values, history and customs. A summer in Malta offers students unique opportunities that can change their world view of health, culture and health care systems.

Best Wishes and hoping to see you in Malta.
